Charity refers to showing humanity, kindness, and social ethics toward individuals in need. In this case, the elderly are viewed as the needy in this setup (McCartney 1). However, Marian presents her selfish nature from the incident whereby she hid an apple in the prickly shrub that was near the elderly home.
